Situated in the heart of Kent, the Garden of England, Maidstone is a thriving commercial and shopping centre. The River Medway which cuts through the town historically provided a valuable resource and transport route for the paper, cloth and quarrying industries that have made the town an important centre of industry since the 17 th century.

Today the Medway provides a haven for wildlife and is popular for pleasure boating and narrow-boating with a lively river festival in July. Maidstone itself has a bustling shopping centre and plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes as well as nightclubs, theatres and cinemas for evening and weekend entertainment. Nearby attractions include the historic Leeds castle, beautiful Mote Park and the Bredgar and Wormshill Light Railway which runs through the North Kent Downs.
